In the fall of 1990, some 25 students joined Diana Eck for a course at Harvard University on “World Religions in New England.” Since 1991, the Pluralism Project has engaged students and affiliates in the study of the new religious diversity in the United States. We have a special research interest in the communities and religious traditions of Asia and the Middle East that have become woven into the religious fabric of the United States in the past forty years.

In October 1963 Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant observers at the Second Vatican Council shared with Pope Paul VI the dream of an international ecumenical institute for theological research and pastoral studies. After his 1964 pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Vatican purchased Tantur (Arabic for "hilltop"), then leased it to the University of Notre Dame (USA) for fifty years. Tantur welcomes scholars and students to pursue their research and writing for longer or shorter periods, and offers programs of continuing education and spiritual renewal for parish clergy, teachers and other church workers.

The Catholic University of America’s Institute for Interreligious Study and Dialogue (IISD) promotes interreligious scholarship and exchange in religion, theology and related disciplines, and across various religious traditions. It seeks to facilitate the academic study and communal practice of interreligious dialogue. IISD explores the impact of interreligious dialogue on faith traditions and how they might appropriate new insights or redefine themselves through it. It will undertake the tasks of providing opportunities and resources for gaining greater understanding of various religious traditions, recognizing the religious diversity of societies with its ramifications, and for meeting in dialogue with representatives of other religious communities.
