General Announcement
January 18-25, 2008 marks 100 years since the Society of the Atonement began praying for Christian Unity during the first Church Unity Octave. In honor of the centenary, the Society of the Atonement is sponsoring events to promote Christian Unity and sharing their successful experiences in the ecumenical movement. The theme chosen for 2008 is “Pray without ceasing.” Throughout 2008, join Christians everywhere in praying "that they may all be one" joining our prayer with that the Lord Jesus Christ. “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:12a, 13b-18) is the theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25). Begun in 1908, these days have been set aside each year so that Christians the world over may share the prayer of Jesus: “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Note the dates and plan to participate in the following special observances.
Sunday, January 13
The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins in five days, on Friday, January 18, and continues through Friday, January 25. The theme for 2008 is “Pray without ceasing”. Use the Daily Scripture and Prayer Guide to join with Christians around the world praying “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Plan to join with members of other Christian churches and communities in our area for the following special observances...
Sunday, January 20
Today is Ecumenical Sunday when we celebrate what God is doing through the many ecumenical agencies — local, regional, national and international — that make up the modern ecumenical movement. As we continue our special prayers “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21), we take time to familiarize ourselves with the work that (insert the name of one or more agencies) does to promote understanding and cooperation among Christians and others in our community.
The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began on the Friday, January 18, continues with (event) and concludes Friday, January 25, with (event).
Sunday, January 27
Although the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is over, we will continue to work and pray without ceasing “that all may be one... that the world may believe” (John 17:21). In the coming weeks and months, we will be joining other Christian churches in our area in these and other ecumenical opportunities: (listed planned events and activities).
